Get ready to hit the dance floor... Shalamar will be in town! Indigo at the O2, London
Sunday 20th November 2016
LHG Live are proud to announce a new winter 2016 date for cult disco, soul and R&B stars Shalamar. With 25 million record sales under their belts, Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel, along with the newest member Carolyn Griffey are set to thrill at the Indigo at the O2 in London on Monday 20 November as one of the most powerful and energetic acts on the circuit today.
Shalamar are regarded as one of the most influential bands of their time, injecting their unique style, energy and passion into sounds that have commanded dance floors the world over. The Shalamar concert at the Indigo at the O2, London on Sunday 20 November really will be 'A Night to Remember'!
Shalamar is formed of: Howard Hewett - a Grammy award winning artist, largely considered one of the top 10 greatest male soul singers of all time; Jeffrey Daniel – an award-winning choreographer, famous for introducing body popping to the UK and for teaching Michael Jackson how to Moonwalk; and Carolyn Griffey – heir to the Solar Records dynasty and a passionate soul performer.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s the name Shalamar became synonymous with the contemporary sound of catchy feel-good dance music. They are best known for a string of worldwide hits such as 'The Second Time Around', 'Make That Move', 'I Owe You One', 'I Can Make You Feel Good', 'There It Is', 'Friends' and of course their often copied anthem 'A Night to Remember'. They were also highly regarded as fashion icons and trendsetters. Today there is still an incredibly insatiable demand for their electrifyingly funky style and 'get up and dance' beats, as evidenced in over 30 recent sell-out UK-wide tour dates.
Shalamar started life as a 'manufactured' group. Dick Griffey was the talent coordinator for US hit show Soul Train when he took session musicians and created the record 'Uptown Festival' which became such a hit that he realised demand for an actual group so he set about creating one with soul train dancer Jeffrey Daniel, his dance partner and lead-vocalist Gary Mumford. Gary later left the band to pursue other interests and was replaced by Gerald Brown who also went on to leave the trio, eventually leading to the introduction of the "voice Page 2 of 3
of Shalamar" - Howard Hewett, whose first record 'The Second Time Around' was a million seller.
As well as being number one on the US R&B chart 'The Second Time Around' went on to reach number eight in the main Billboard pop chart indicating Shalamar's intention to cross over with an edgy sound incorporating funk, disco, R&B and pop. The trio from 1979 until 1983 racked up more than a dozen hits all over the world including North America, Europe, Africa and Japan. The album 'Friends' was number 1 on the US RNB charts and went Platinum in the UK. At the height of the fame the group split although Hewett continued with new members and went on to win a grammy for 'Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills' from Beverly Hills Cop in 1984.
In 1999, Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel reformed the group and began touring again with Carolyn Griffey, the daughter of founder Dick Griffey joining the line-up in 2001. The group's appearance at the Indigo at 02 is the first date in their Greatest Hits Tour 2016 which will see them visit nine venues across the UK.
Pete Webber, Live Music Programmer – Indigo at The O2: "We are absolutely thrilled to include Shalamar within our winter events line-up. They have performed here with us on several occasions and it's always a great show. You can expect a vibrant, fun and world-class soul performance, which we are certain will be a huge success."
Liz Doogan-Hobbs MBE, CEO of LHG Live said; "Shalamar are one of those bands you dream of working with. Their success at the height of their fame was extraordinary and they continue to command a following that sees great demand for their funky dance moves and powerful renditions of disco, soul and R&B favourites. We are greatly looking forward to their concert at Indigo at the O2."
