TICKETS GO ON SALE FRIDAY 12 APRIL
DunDee 80s is one of the most exciting events to join the city’s summer music calendar, featuring ABC, Hue & Cry, Midge Ure, Go West and China Crisis all on ONE STAGE at Dundee Slessor Gardens on Saturday 24 August! Fans can expect a TRULY INCREDIBLE festival line-up of the cream of 80s icons; this is retro revival at its finest, promising a night of evocative fun and some of the best tunes from the decade!
ABC has enjoyed a glittering career to date; resoundingly one of several groups who came along and kick-started the Eighties with their own brand of pop for a ‘new decade’. Led by singer Martin Fry, the band hailing from Sheffield fused the world of disco funk with their own unique new romantic post punk vision. On its release in May 1982, their debut album The Lexicon of Love went straight to Number One, including the singles Tears Are Not Enough, Poison Arrow, The Look Of Love and All Of My Heart. Voted by many as the best British album of the decade, it remains a classic to this day. Countless albums have followed, including Beauty Stab – with its much rawer, hard-edged sound, the unashamedly electronic How To Be A Zillionaire, Alphabet City and Up, followed by Abracadabra, Skyscraping and Lexicon Of Live – with live renditions of their debut album The Lexicon Of Love. In 2016 ABC released The Lexicon Of Love II; their top five hit album.
Hue & Cry are brothers Patrick and Gregory Kane, from Coatbridge, Scotland. Their debut single Labour of Love from the album Seduced and Abandoned the song was apropos of the growing dance-pop scene, with Greg hammering a funky piano line beneath Pat’s lightning fast rap-esque vocals. Backed by synths, it retained a soulful edge which would later become part of their signature sound. Looking For Linda and Violently, both smash hits, followed from their second album Remote. The 90s saw the duo take an experimental leap with Truth and Love and Showtime, that infused jazz, R&B and Nuyorican Latin-funk. After several years hiatus to purse individual careers they released Open Soul in 2008, which harkened back to the pop hits that elevated them in the 80s. Several other albums followed. Pocketful of Stones was released in 2017, infusing the best of their sonic pallet along with personal developments within their careers and personal lives, and addresses social and political shortcomings.
Midge Ure has received Ivor Novello and Grammy Awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records not to mention his catalogue of musical directorship of a series of rock concerts, including the Prince’s Trust and Night of the Proms. Midge has been part of many bands; Slik, with their Number One hit Forever and Ever, The Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy and Visage but it is with Ultravox that many of his fans will remember him most, with the band widely recognized as a major influence on the new romantic and electro-pop movements of the early 80s, with their singles Reap the Wild Wind, Dancing with Tears in My Eyes, Love’s Great Adventure, and the timeless Vienna. Midge has released many songs since, including under his own name, including his single If I Was, which reached Number One, and the Number Two album The Gift, and of course wrote and produced Band Aid Do They Know Its Christmas with Bob Geldof – rock royalty indeed!
Go West are Peter Cox and Richard Drummie. Their debut single We Close Our Eyes was released in the spring of 1985, reaching Number Five in the UK charts and became a top 10 hit in the USA. This ‘overnight’ success was followed by three further UK top 10 hits – Call Me, Goodbye Girl and Don’t Look Down. The album Go West sold two million copies worldwide and remained on the UK chart for 83 weeks, establishing them as one of the finest song-writing partnerships to emerge in the 80s. Six albums and 20 million sales later, Go West are stronger than ever. They have enjoyed numerous chart singles worldwide, notably King Of Wishful Thinking; the opening song in the extremely successful film ‘Pretty Woman’. Go West have played live around the world continuously since their inception. They have certainly earned their reputation as an outstanding, exciting live act.
China Crisis, emerged in 1981 from their native Kirkby, Merseyside as the song writing duo of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist/vocalist Eddie Lundon, who over the years have been accompanied by a gifted and creative but ever-mutable group of musicians. They are renowned for not just stretching the creative limits of their time but incorporating horns, strings, woodwinds, pedal steel; the result is an explosive combination of distinctive sounds that present elements of jazz, reggae, country and their own impressive melodies and harmonies. The clearly identifiable China Page 3 of 5
Crisis sound stood and continues to stand out from the crowd and has seen them garner an impressive eleven UK Top 50 singles, including Christian, Wishful Thinking and Black Man Ray, and three UK Top 40 albums, including the Gold Flaunt the Imperfection. 2018 marked the 35th anniversary of the esteemed album Working with Fire and Steel – Possible Pop Songs Volume Two.
